For a long time, we had two users who used Microstation, one was in there daily during certain projects (maybe 20% of the year), and one user who was only going in for a few minutes at a time once month to print and convert files he was getting from a client.īentley would let us know (way after the fact) whenever we had both users getting a license at the same time, and kept asking us to buy another license, which obviously we didn't need. The fact that they don't let you limit usage has always bugged me. They are, without a doubt, the absolutely worst CAD vendor to deal with (and speaking as someone who does a lot of business with Autodesk, that's saying something!) If I could dump Bentley products, I would, but unfortunately, but our customer base requires that we use them. At the time, Bentley claimed that this was not a money grab, and they would never simply charge you for overuse but would rather use the data to "help" you right-size your licensing. To the bit about the "on premise" Select server, the ability to control overuse went away sometime around the release of Select Server 8.
I have been told there are tools to mitigate the risk, and was promised information on them, but I have been waiting for more information since January. My Bentley rep claimed that I was the only one she's talked to that took issue with their "write us a blank check, we'll fill it in for you" licensing policy, and seemed mystified that I had a problem with this. Joe7711, do you have information on the INI switch to limit overuse? The situation is absurd, and seems to be a permit for Bentley to print money. I used to encourage learning and using MicroStation and InRoads, now I push for using Civil 3D. Now we are getting overages on InRoads which historically had lower usage. We converted licenses between InRoads and MicroStation because of overages that made Bentley sales call often asking to buy more licensing. Unfortunately the VP has okayed install on additional installs because of pressure from departments. I had removed the software close to the count of licenses and created a VM with the software for casual use. The 30 day method of licensing may not allow for control. I need to download and install the latest version of the full license server SS3 or SS4, not gateway, to see if it contains a switch.
The server that used to operate our Bentley licenses is long gone since we switched to Bentley hosted licensing around the time XM edition was released. The INI switch was an option in the on-premise network license server configuration (pre-v8) that allowed going over you license count.
